Mapping a Massive Million Square Foot facility in Two Days Using LiDAR and Photogrammetry

This case study talks about a project where a partially gutted out warehouse with 1 million sq. ft. of floor space, for an automobile manufacturer in Central Valley, CA, was scanned using LiDAR in the interior and using photogrammetry for the exterior. All the as-built conditions for the factory warehouse was captured in 2 days. The output from these scans were a complete 3D workspace with the ability to accurate perform measurement, combined point clouds, and an exterior 3D mesh model. These were used to analyze existing conditions and for planning the new design of the factory. The schedule achieved was 5 times faster than the regular baseline, for projects of similar scale. This case study highlights some of the challenges faced by the reality capture team in facing the aggressive timeline, and suggests the means to overcome them. This presentation will focus on: • Teaching the correct process in choosing the equipment and technology • How LiDAR was used to capture the interiors • How Photogrammetry and Drones was used to capture the exteriors Lastly, it will discuss the process of combining the point clouds resulting from LiDAR and photogrammetry.

High-Accuracy GNSS for Non-Surveyors at Oregon DOT

The Oregon Department of Transportation has been piloting the use of tablet based high accuracy GNSS units by non-surveyors. Prior to the pilot project, all high accuracy GNSS at ODOT was handled by ODOT survey crews or consultant surveyors. The pilot project introduced new equipment and provided training to non-surveyors in the use of high accuracy GNSS for ODOT projects. What began as a roll out new hardware became an agency wide paradigm shift in how high accuracy GNSS is used. The initial focus of the project was working with ODOT construction personnel for construction site monitoring, quality control, quality assurance and general construction site measuring and positioning. ODOT construction projects have seen a huge shift in the last 5 years from traditional construction methods to advanced automated machine guidance methods, all but requiring the use of high accuracy positioning tools by ODOT to monitor the construction process. The second phase of the project issued the same high accuracy GNSS to ODOT technical staff that have historically used lower accuracy GIS grade GPS equipment. The presentation will cover why the pilot project was initiated, the equipment used, the required training, a cross section of field uses, and where the project is headed in the future. Benefits realized thus far in the project, obstacles encountered, cost of implementation, and other potential uses will also be covered. The equipment used for the pilot project is rugged Windows based tablets with integrated high accuracy GNSS equipment. The tablets use cell modules or wifi hotspots for internet connectivity to connect to a real time GNSS network for accurate RTK solutions.

Surveying into the Next Dimension: Combining 3D Reality Capture with Legacy Land Surveying Methods

Six years ago the Olsson Survey Practice was tasked with figuring out 3D laser scanning and how it would be useful for internal and external clients: not only the technical hurdles of adopting any new technology, but also gaining the trust of various clients, and proving the tech’s viability. It has since grown into every part of the design/build process, and nearly every practice group within the firm. From using our 3D scanners to capture biofuel plants for expansion planning, to monitoring erosion for emergency stabilization, 3D reality capture has been essential in nearly every project. In this presentation we’ll describe some of these projects as well as our experiences along the evolution from a “traditional” survey group, to a practice that combines legacy land surveying and 3D reality capture, and sharing the data for actionable information.
