Innovative Design and Construction Management Solutions for Horizontal Projects

3:30 PM - 3:45 PM
Brazos County is a unique rural Texas county with a significant urban population. The county has a deep tradition in agricultural and petroleum production as well as home to a large university in Texas A&M University. The Brazos County Road & Bridge department is responsible for approximately 914 lane miles of paved and unpaved county roads. The County has been experiencing rapid urban and rural growth over the last decade in both development and petroleum production which has driven the need for major infrastructure work. In order to gain efficiencies with limited resources and to shorten project milestones, Gessner Engineering, working with Brazos County, has leveraged various technologies throughout the design and construction process. These technologies include: UAV photogrammetry with Pix4D, instantaneous deliverable review and correction workflow with Bluebeam and Civil 3D, software/algorithm development in Civil 3D and Excel, and construction (project) management software with ProCore. The utilization of innovative technologies brings multiple benefits to any size project or organization, regardless of technological aptitude.

Using Gaming Engines for Rapid Visualization on Infrastructure Projects

3:45 - 4:00 PM
Rendering engines and visualization toolkits originally developed for the video game industry are finding more and more adoption in AEC. These tools can perform photorealistic rendering in real-time to provide a very realistic and understanding overview of a proposed project, even early in conceptual design. This presentation will present a case study on the use of gaming engine technology for public outreach on a major urban interchange reconfiguration project.

How can Civil Engineering Catch Up to Architecture When It Comes to 3D Visualization?,

4:00 - 4:15 PM
For the 5 years since I started Civil FX- and the 5 years before that- I've been passionately modeling, rendering and visualizing civil engineering projects in 3D to accurately communicate designs. During the same time I've also noticed that architectural visualization is significantly better in every metric. In this presentation, I break down the complex variables that make civil visualization more difficult and offer solutions on how we can work as an industry to utilize incredible advances in software and hardware to catch up to architectural visualization. More importantly, I discuss why we should want to improve on 3D visualization in civil engineering.
