Case Studies in Computer Vision-based Structure Inspection and Monitoring

Application of the 3D laser scanning technology in evaluation of existing structures will be discussed and recent case studies will be presented. The case studies will cover a wide range of utilizing 3D laser scanning in challenging projects where the conventional evaluation methods were not capable of completing the task. The current state of research and development in the field will also be discussed along with further potential applications of 3D imaging techniques for structural assessment and evaluation.

Laser Scanning Applications for the AEC Industry

This presentation will focus on the use of 3d Laser Scanning data to enable forensic studies of building's surfaces and to provide documentation of existing conditions to a level adequate to create replacement parts for buildings with minimal invasive measures to the fabric of the building. It will delve into the accuracy inherent in laser light scanning technology and how it provides an improved method for gaining measurements. The technology's advantages and limitations in the field along with the use of the data within standard CAD programs will be discussed. Examples taken from a variety of projects of buildings and structures will illustrate how scanning data has been used to map planar variations in ceiling and floor surfaces and masonry facades, providing evidence of possible structural shifts or deterioration not apparent through traditional visual inspection and measurement methods. The process for creating detailed façade drawings, 3D models and animations, and use of scanning data as the basis for CNC milling of architectural ornament replication will be presented.

New Sensing-based Structural Health Monitoring Technology

Traditional approaches to monitor civil structures, such as visual inspections, are time consuming and leave the possibility for hidden undetected damage. These drawbacks have promoted the development of structural health monitoring (SHM) over the past decades. In particular, vibration-based SHM uses dynamic response measurements containing critical information about the dynamic properties of a system, which can be subsequently related to structural damage and integrity inconsistencies over a structure. In essence, a global vibration-based structural health monitoring system is used to detect the presence and approximate the location of the damage, followed by local non-destructive evaluations (NDE) for determining the extent of damage. In this presentation, a novel and multi-faceted approach to provide an advanced structural health monitoring is introduced. One-day ambient vibration tests and real-time web-based permanent monitoring systems are the backbone of a successful structural health monitoring program. This system is capable of identifying the structure’s baseline, develop periodic and permanent monitoring solutions, detect global damages and structural changes after a damaging event or building ageing, and quickly perform a seismic evaluations after an earthquake. This system can be used for both new and existing structures to increase their reliability and lifetime. The applications and benefits of this technology will be demonstrated through two landmark projects: the testing of heritage governmental buildings in the Canadian parliamentary precinct and the newly built 2.2 miles Champlain Bridge in Montreal, Canada.
